About this Episode
Navigating Innovation and Sustainability in Dentistry
Dr. Asad Rahman shares insights on technology and eco-friendly practices.
In a time when healthcare is rapidly evolving, innovation plays a crucial role in shaping the future of dentistry. In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Asad Rahman, Clinical Director at Gensmile Dental Care, who shared his insights on how technology and sustainability are intertwined in modern dental practices.
Embracing Technology
Asad emphasized the importance of adopting advanced technologies in dental care. With Gensmile operating 38 practices across the UK, their focus on private dentistry requires them to stay at the forefront of innovation. He stated:
"The data, digital and AI technologies that we've implemented have brought both benefits. It's not just what we see for today and what they can suddenly bring to our patients today, but also what we can gain from the digital and AI technologies going towards the future."
Asad discussed the implementation of AI to enhance clinical operations, such as improving diagnostics through radiography and using digital scanners to minimise waste. This move towards digital workflows not only improves patient care but also streamlines operational processes, enabling real-time data access which can lead to more informed decision-making.
The Sustainability Challenge
Sustainability is becoming a hot topic in dentistry, and Asad shed light on the challenges and misconceptions surrounding it. He mentioned:
"Two thirds of the carbon footprint that comes from dentistry is actually from patients and colleagues traveling to and from the practice."
This statistic illustrates the need for a broader understanding of sustainability in the dental industry. Asad pointed out that while adopting greener materials is important, it must be part of a larger strategy that includes operational efficiency and patient care.
He also highlighted that many perceive eco-friendly practices as costly, saying:
"It's not necessarily always the case... there are some easy, quick wins."
Asad encouraged practitioners to look for behavioural changes that can lead to sustainability without significant financial investment.
Overcoming Barriers to Change
When discussing the barriers to implementing sustainable practices, Asad noted that change management is a significant challenge. He explained:
"The biggest barrier that we all face... is trying to get change is not easy when we're trying to take any initiative forward."
To effectively promote sustainable practices, it's vital to communicate the immediate benefits to patient care while also addressing long-term environmental impacts.
Final Thoughts
The conversation with Dr. Rahman left me inspired about the future of dentistry. As technology evolves, so too must our approaches to sustainability. By embracing innovation, we can improve patient outcomes while also being mindful of our environmental impact.
For those interested in a deeper dive into these topics, I encourage you to listen to the full episode.
